Each and everyday affords you the opportunity to do something new. It is a chance for you to give life what you have and to become what you have unlimited amounts of potential to become. With this in mind, you must also realize that there are great odds against you, and in your favor. You are the thing that is capable of shifting the tide in your direction. Right now our country and even the world if facing a pandemic of potentially epic proportions. You have to realize that this has given you two separate opportunities. The first is to take what you have been given and turn it into something that you couldn’t even imagine, while the other is to simply stop everything. Today, I want to encourage you to say no to mediocrity.
The Problem
This may come across as harsh, but it is important that I say this to you. The world isn’t going to encourage you to be more than you are or to become more than you want to be. It is simply going to tell you to do what must be done to live, pay taxes, and to support you community in a way that makes you a good citizen. If you do these things, you have met the standard of the world. The problem that I see with this is that it lends to simply being the bare minimum of what you are capable of being. It doesn’t challenge you to be your best, to contribute to your society, to achieve greatness or to transfer that to your future generations. This is why I see a problem. This type of thinking and encouragement only leads you to do what needs to be done to live.
The Perfect Storm
I want to encourage you to get to a place, if you are not already there, of thriving and excelling in your life. You might be the type of person that is always working hard and pushing yourself to the next level, but I want to tell you that it only takes the perfect circumstances to put you in a different position, if you aren’t careful. This is why you have to want specific things for yourself. If you haven’t determined that it is important for you to reach certain goals and to achieve things for yourself, if you don’t know your why, then the perfect storm will create the perfect stimulus for mediocrity in your life.
Now you might be saying, “Makeda there is no way that I will ever be the person that does the bare minimum to get by,” but I want to challenge you to see things differently. This isn’t something that will happen over night. When things slow down around you, you have no one telling you to do better or to work harder, when no one else has set the standard or established the goal, given you permission to stop for a while, you will find out what you really want out of life. You will learn if your goals are actually yours or if you are simply working towards them because you feel like you have to.
What you can do?
You have to frame you mind so that you can say no to becoming mediocre. You have to have goals that you pursue, regardless of the current condition of the world. You have to have things that you aim at accomplishing because of what is in you and because of what you desire to achieve in your life for your family and for your names-sake. This may sound like a strange way of looking at things, but I believe it is important to discuss, right now.
We are at a point in history where only we, our parents, and for many of us, even our great grandparent have never been. The pandemic of 1919 was a century ago and lended itself to a vast amount of people that found themselves in utter destruction. Death knocked on the doors of many and few are still around to tell us what happened at that time. Today, we stand on the cusps of a new era where this thing can make or break many and societies hang in the balance. This means that each individual has to claim their responsibility to pursuing excellence without having to be told what to do.
What happens if all of the consequences of not showing up, not doing the work, not getting the money disappeared. Who would you be, what would you do, what would you aim for.? These are the things that I want you to begin thinking about. You have to be able to pursue things that are of importance to you outside of consequence. This is how you begin to fulfill your destiny and learn to do so without the pain of life experience. I say this because for some it is only pain that pushes them forward. While the focus of this post is to encourage you not to be mediocre, I also want to encourage you to find your own stimulus within, so that you can move forward in your life, regardless of what is happening around you.
Take the Next Step
SO here is what I want to encourage you to do.
Take some time to really think about who you are and what you want out of life.
Start to really take a look at what you have been pursuing and ask yourself why you have chosen to pursue those things.
Once you have been brutally honest with yourself, see if there is some underlying fear that you have been using to push yourself forward.
Then take the time to list out what you really want out of life, for your family, and the impact that you want to make in the world. Imaging how can achieve your dreams and reach your potential. What would that feel like and what would it require of you. Once you get to this place of realization, you are closer to seeing what you are capable of. Now imagine that the world completely changed and you were only responsible to yourself for the effects and outcomes of what you have done. What are you going to do about it? How are you going to hold yourself accountable? What are you going to implement in order for you to continue to move forward? How are you going to celebrate your wins and what will you continually seek to achieve?
These are key steps to saying no to being mediocre and more importantly, to saying yes to being successful in your own life.
